News and Notes of interest

Welcome to the Sherwood gym newsletter for October and November. The students have been soaring back into PE and getting active and moving! We had a very successful Monster 5k at Alderwood Mall on October 5th with 290 registrations!!

MISS COOK’S CLASS WON THE $500 prize for the most entrants in the race!!! AWESOME!!

Running Rocks is every Friday and open to all grades except when there is no Move 60. Move 60 is Mondays through Thursdays for 2nd to 6th graders.

Cross Country has also started which runs October 8th to November 2nd on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:50-4:50.  K-2 practices Tuesdays, and 3rd-6th practices Thursdays. We have Cross Country running meets on Saturday 10/26 and 11/2. We meet at the Edmonds Boys and Girls Club and run through the city for 1.2 miles and parents are welcome to run as well. We will cap off our last meet with a free pancake breakfast for athletes and their families.

Upcoming events/news

  • Pumpkin Run: Friday October 25th, 3:00- Edmonds Woodway High School stadium, free. Run starts at 3:00, but be there at 2:45 to turn in parent/guardian consent form. Questions: Jenni McCloughan: mccloughanj@edmonds.wednet.edu, or Jennie Hershey: hersheyj@edmonds.wednet.edu
  • SPOOKY PE will be on Thursday Oct. 31st – lots of fun activities including guess the weight of Ralph the Pumpkin, glow in the dark hockey and bowling, free popcorn for all.
  • GAGA Ball instruction will be the week of Oct. 28th-Nov. 1st.
  • OPERATION GRATITUDE – donate your Halloween candy to the troops – buckets will be outside the gym after Halloween. Last year we collected over 300 pounds of candy!
  • Pedestrian Safety: a partnership with Edmonds School District and City of Edmonds: learn about pedestrian safety around the city for all second grade classes. Tuesday 10-29, 2:35-3:35, Friday 11-1, 2:35-3:35, and Wednesday 11-6, 10:00-11:15 with a walking field trip to meet the mayor and police to practice the skills we have learned.
  • Tennis: tennis equipment is coming for November so the students will be learning how to play tennis
  • Lacrosse team: sign ups will begin in November and is open to grades 1st-6th. It is FREE!!!
  • Ultimate Frisbee clinic: November 18-22 guest taught by National Ultimate Frisbee coach Kyle Weisbrod

Seattle Marathon Team

Be a part of the award winning Sherwood Seattle Kid’s Marathon team. Athletes in grades K-6 run a marathon (26.2 miles), one mile at a time on their own. Each athlete must also read 13 books and do 13 “do rights”. Each accomplishment will earn the athletes awards along the way. We will run the final 1.2 miles together as a team in Seattle on Saturday November 26th. Please go to SeattleMarathon.org to check it out. Sign up online under Team Name: SHERWOOD Keyword: EAGLES. Sign up today! Each athlete receives a medal and finisher shirt at the end of the race. Our team will be featured in the yearbook and the Edmonds School District News. Parents are welcome to wear a race number and run with their athlete as well. Burn off that turkey!!!
